Canada has only five statutory holidays that apply everywhere: New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Canada Day, Labour Day and Christmas Day. Everything else depends on your province or territory. In 2027, British Columbia, Yukon and the Northwest Territories have the most, with 11. Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia have the fewest, with 6.

Holidays that aren’t what you might think
Easter Monday
Easter Monday (March 29, 2027) isn’t a general statutory holiday in most provinces, although federal government workers, many banks and schools get the day off. In Quebec, employers must give either Good Friday or Easter Monday.
The August civic holiday
The first Monday in August (August 2, 2027) goes by many names: BC Day, Saskatchewan Day, New Brunswick Day, Heritage Day in Alberta, Terry Fox Day in Manitoba, Natal Day in Nova Scotia and Simcoe Day in parts of Ontario. But it is only a statutory holiday in BC, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, the NWT and Nunavut. In Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba and Nova Scotia, many people get it off, but employers don’t have to give it.
Remembrance Day
November 11 is a statutory holiday in most provinces, but not in Ontario, Quebec or Manitoba. In Nova Scotia, it is covered by a separate Remembrance Day Act with its own rules.
Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving (October 11, 2027) is not a statutory holiday in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI or Newfoundland and Labrador.
Boxing Day
December 26 is only a statutory holiday in Ontario and for federally regulated workers. Many retailers in other provinces are open, and Boxing Day sales are a big shopping day.
Christmas 2027 falls on a weekend
In 2027, Christmas Day is a Saturday and Boxing Day a Sunday. What you get depends on your province. In Ontario, employees get a substitute day off, usually Monday, December 27 (and Tuesday, December 28 for Boxing Day). In BC, the law gives qualifying employees holiday pay rather than a substitute day off, although many employers close on December 27 anyway. Check your provincial rules or your employment contract. See how other countries handle Christmas on a weekend.
Plan your long weekends
The Family Day long weekend runs from February 13 to 15, Victoria Day from May 22 to 24, and Canada Day falls on a Thursday, so taking Friday, July 2 off gives you four days. In BC, September 30 and November 11 are also Thursdays. See our guide to turning a few vacation days into 20+ days off in 2027.
How we checked these holidays
We checked each province’s and territory’s list against its official employment standards rules (for example, BC’s Employment Standards Branch, Ontario’s Employment Standards Act guide, Alberta’s general holidays page and Quebec’s CNESST), and the Canada Labour Code for federally regulated workplaces. We counted the holidays that employers must give under general employment law. Collective agreements, government employees and some industries may get more. Where official sources were unclear, we noted it.
