Why does Thanksgiving move every year?
Thanksgiving isn’t tied to a calendar date but to a day of the week. In the United States, federal law sets it on the fourth Thursday of November, so it can fall between November 22 and 28. In Canada, it’s the second Monday of October, between October 8 and 14.
A short history of the US date
President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving in October 1863, setting it for the last Thursday of November. Presidents followed that tradition until 1939, when November had five Thursdays. President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving a week earlier to give stores a longer shopping season during the Great Depression. The change was so unpopular that critics called it “Franksgiving”, and for a couple of years states celebrated on different days. In December 1941, Congress passed a law fixing Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November, where it has stayed ever since.
Canadian Thanksgiving
Canada’s Thanksgiving has been on the second Monday of October since 1957, when Parliament proclaimed it a day of thanks for the harvest. It’s a statutory holiday in most provinces and territories, but not in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI or Newfoundland and Labrador, where it depends on your employer. See Canada’s statutory holidays by province.
Is the day after Thanksgiving a holiday?
The Friday after US Thanksgiving, Black Friday, is not a federal holiday. But many employers and a number of state governments give the day off, which turns Thanksgiving into a four-day weekend for millions of people. In 2026, that weekend runs from Thursday, November 26 to Sunday, November 29. Taking Monday to Wednesday off as well gives you 9 days in a row: see our guide to long weekends.
