Key facts
- Black Friday 2026: Friday, November 27.
- Cyber Monday 2026: Monday, November 30.

When do midnight Eastern deals start where you are?
Many US retailers launch online Black Friday deals at 12:00 AM Eastern Time on Friday, November 27. Here’s what time that is around the world:
| Where you are | Local time when deals go live |
|---|---|
| New York, Toronto, Montréal | 12:00 AM Friday, Nov 27 |
| Chicago, Dallas, Calgary, Winnipeg | 11:00 PM Thursday, Nov 26 (Winnipeg: 12:00 AM Friday) |
| Denver, Phoenix, Vancouver | 10:00 PM Thursday, Nov 26 |
| Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco | 9:00 PM Thursday, Nov 26 |
| Honolulu | 7:00 PM Thursday, Nov 26 |
| London | 5:00 AM Friday, Nov 27 |
| Manila | 1:00 PM Friday, Nov 27 |
| Sydney | 4:00 PM Friday, Nov 27 |
Two things are different in 2026: Vancouver and Calgary are now an hour ahead of their usual winter time, and Winnipeg is on the same time as Toronto, because British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba no longer turn their clocks back. Some retailers start deals at midnight in each local time zone instead, so check the fine print. Set an online alarm so you don’t miss a limited drop.

How the date is set
Black Friday is the day after US Thanksgiving, which is the fourth Thursday of November (see Thanksgiving dates). Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving weekend. In years when Thanksgiving is late, like 2030, Cyber Monday falls in December.
Where does the name “Black Friday” come from?
The phrase was popularised by police in Philadelphia in the 1950s and 1960s, who used it for the crowds and traffic chaos on the day after Thanksgiving. Retailers later promoted a happier explanation: that it was the day stores went from losing money (“in the red”) to making a profit (“in the black”). Cyber Monday is much newer. The term was coined in 2005 by Shop.org, part of the US National Retail Federation, to encourage online shopping after the holiday weekend.
Is Black Friday a holiday?
Black Friday is not a federal holiday in the United States, but many employers give the day off, and some states treat it as a holiday for state workers. Banks and post offices are generally open. See the official days off on our US public holidays page. In Canada, the UK, Australia and elsewhere, Black Friday is a shopping event only. Canadian retailers follow the US date, even though Canadian Thanksgiving is in October.
Tips for Black Friday shopping
- Know your time zone. A deal that starts “at midnight” could mean midnight Eastern, Pacific or your local time. Check with our time zone converter.
- Track prices beforehand. Note the normal price of the items you want in the weeks before, so you can tell a real discount from an inflated “was” price.
- Make a list and a budget. Limited-time countdowns are designed to make you decide fast.
- Check return policies. Some deals are final sale.
